MEMBERSHIP INTO RETIREMENT
Important information for all active members, retiring members, and retirees.
Retiring soon? Notify UFLAC of your updated separation date and tell us whether you want to continue your membership as an Active-Retiree.
Or, for those already retired would you like to reinstate your UFLAC membership?
Recent changes to the UFLAC Constitution and Bylaws now allow members to remain with UFLAC after retirement as Active-Retiree members. Eligible retirees may also have the opportunity to rejoin, consistent with the eligibility requirements and procedures established in the Bylaws.
Retirement from the Los Angeles Fire Department does not have to mean separation from UFLAC, the IAFF, or the programs and protections that remain important throughout retirement.
Before You Retire: Notify UFLAC
Your retirement or separation date may change during the retirement process. It is important that UFLAC receive your current, confirmed separation date so our records and benefits administration can be handled correctly. Notifying UFLAC helps us:
- Ensure that you receive your retirement gift, including your axe and ring, as applicable.
- Confirm that your benefits and insurance remain at your desired level of coverage.
- Properly adjust your UFLAC membership dues if you remain an Active-Retiree.
- Remove your membership dues if you choose not to remain a UFLAC member.
- Update your personal email address, mailing address, and telephone number so UFLAC can continue to reach you after separation.
Members who continue their membership after retirement will be designated as Active-Retirees, as identified in the IAFF Constitution and Bylaws.
Active-Retirees will retain most UFLAC membership rights and remain part of Local 112. Active-Retirees will only be excluded from voting or participating in decisions and sensitive discussions reserved for active members, including matters that solely concern active employment, collective bargaining, contracts, working conditions, or active-member dues.
Active-Retirees will retain all other rights provided in the UFLAC Bylaws and remain eligible for IAFF training, programs, benefits, and services available to Active-Retiree members. These IAFF programs and benefits include:
- Advocacy protecting pensions, Social Security benefits, retiree healthcare, and other earned benefits
- IAFF Foundation support, Disaster Relief Funds, Burn Fund assistance, and the Medical Assistance Program
- The IAFF Center of Excellence, peer support training, and occupational health, safety, medicine, and cancer resources
- IAFF education and training opportunities
- International Fire Fighter magazine
- Eligibility to attend certain IAFF events
- IAFF Financial Corporation programs
- Qualifying IAFF legal resources and programs

If You Do Not Want to Remain a Member
If you choose not to continue your UFLAC membership after retirement, please state that decision when you notify UFLAC of your separation date. This will allow UFLAC to close your membership record and ensure that your membership dues are removed in a timely manner.
